Have you read Made to Stick yet?

That's one of the things they highlighted -- that successful companies know exactly who their customers are, and even have names for them. So when it comes time to design features, or change something they can put themselves in the mindset of the customer.

You are absolutely right, individuals want to be treated as individuals and spoken to with relevance. Treating customers as a number simply doesn't work!
